New Balance Men's ML574 Sneaker Review

The New Balance running shoe, model 574, is a great training/racing shoe for runners who want foot stability, elevated heel, wide toe box, and good heel and forefoot cushioning. The shoes are wide, size D, and orthotics can be added easily once the stock insert is removed. I have high arches, and this model is the best I have found to avoid injury when training at moderate mileage on hard surface city streets and rural roads.
The stability of the shoe has one cost. There is a high cushioned leather piece extending up from the heel cup that can put pressure on the Achilles tendon. I bend this back repeatedly each time I lace up and it becomes flexible after a few runs.
Another criticism is the thin hard rubber outer sole that wears easily, on the outer edges of the heel. Shoe repair compound applied to the wear points extends the life of the sole.
This particular shoe is nice looking, black and gray with red touches. I've worn the 574 model for years and wear the shoes for walking once the running life has ended, about 800 miles for me. The price is very reasonable compared to the many brands of high cost shoes I've tried that I can't wear without injury.
